HOW TO START AND OPERATE A MINING BUSINESS IN TANZANIA KEY RULES FOR LOCALS AND FOREIGNERS

Starting and running a mining business in Tanzania is open to everyone, both locals and foreigners. However, there are some rules about who can get certain mining licenses. Some licenses cannot be given to foreigners.
For licenses that foreigners can get, the law says they must prioritize using local resources. This means they should use local people, local goods, services, and medicines as much as possible. This is part of Tanzania’s local content rules.
If a company or person (like a contractor or subcontractor) is involved in mining, they must make sure local content is part of their mining work.
If a foreign company wants to supply goods or services to a mining business in Tanzania, it must form a joint venture with a local Tanzanian company. The local company must own at least 20% of the joint venture.

Before starting mining activities, the company must submit a plan to the Mining Commission that includes:

  • The role of the local Tanzanian company,
  • How much of the company the local partner owns (equity),
  • And how the company will transfer technology and skills to the local partner.
  • To open a mining company in Tanzania, the company law applies. This means:

  • There must be at least two shareholders,
  • There must be at least two directors,
  • The company must have a company secretary,
  • The company must have a business address in Tanzania,
  • The company must show its capital, including the number of shares and the value of each share.
