The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) is the government agency responsible for administering tax and customs laws in Tanzania. Through its Customs and Excise Department, TRA oversees the clearance, storage, and release of imported goods while ensuring compliance with the country's customs legislation.
From time to time, TRA issues public notices to inform importers and the general public of their legal obligations and important deadlines.
Darstate Attorney wishes to inform the public of an important notice issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) through its Customs and Excise Department.
On 22 July 2026, the Commissioner for Customs and Excise, Mr. Juma B. Hassan, issued a public notice informing owners of motor vehicles and other goods appearing on the list published on the TRA Customs and Excise portal that such goods will be deemed abandoned if they are not removed from the customs area within 30 days from the date of the notice.
The notice applies to motor vehicles and other goods located in the customs areas of Zanzibar Region, Dar es Salaam Wharf, and Inland Container Depots (ICDs). Members of the public whose goods are stored in these locations should verify whether they appear on the published list.
The 30-day period runs from 22 July 2026 and expires on 20 August 2026. Vehicle owners, importers, clearing agents, and all interested parties are therefore urged to act without delay.
According to the notice, once the 30-day period expires, the goods may be sold through a public auction or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the applicable law. Failure to take action before the deadline may result in unnecessary financial loss, legal consequences, and the permanent loss of ownership of the affected goods.
If you have imported a motor vehicle or other goods, visit the TRA Customs and Excise portal to verify whether your property appears on the published list. If your vehicle or goods are listed, take the necessary steps to complete the required customs procedures and remove them from the customs area before the 20 August 2026 deadline.
