In Tanzania the vision of the Construction Industry is to have a dynamic, efficient and competitive local construction industry that is able to undertake construction projects of any magnitude and participate effectively in providing its services in the regional and global market place.

The sector includes major construction project such housing, roads, bridges, water, health, and power infrastructure.

Key Institutions in this sector include Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronic Services Agency (TEMESA), Tanzania Building Agency (TBA), Roads Fund Board (RFB), National Construction Council (NCC) and regulatory bodies i.e. Contractors Registration Board (CRB), Engineers Registration Board (ERB), and Architect and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board (AQRB).

CRB is responsible to register and regulate all types of Contractors and to promote the development of their capacities for the purpose of protecting consumers of construction services in Tanzania while ERB responsible to regulate and monitor engineering practice in Tanzania.

In order for are person to become an engineer in Tanzania, a person must have the required academic qualifications and official registration from the Engineers Registration Board (ERB). First, one must complete a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a university recognized by the TCU and ERB. After graduation, the individual registers as a Graduate Engineer and undergoes at least three years of practical training under the supervision of a registered engineer. Upon successful assessment and interview by the ERB, the person can be registered as a Professional Engineer, which legally allows them to practice engineering independently in Tanzania.

In government sectors, tenders are obtained through a website called the National e-Procurement System of Tanzania (NeST). To apply for a tender in NeST, you must register as a tenderer, either as an individual or a company. NeST gains its legal authority through the Public Procurement Act No. 10 of 2023. All public institutions issue tenders through this system to ensure fair competition. Also, tender is advertised in newspapers.

In the private sector, tenders are obtained through company websites, or sometimes private organizations may contact you directly by email or phone using the contact information provided on your company’s website.

In organizations, tenders are obtained through their official websites. For example, the World Bank advertises tenders through the Procurement Notices – World Bank platform, as do many other organizations.

In Tanzania, the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) oversee company registration and dissolution under the Companies Act, Cap 212 (Revised 2023). Before dissolution, the company must settle all outstanding debts, pay taxes to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), and notify relevant authorities such as the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) if the company was registered as an engineering service provider.
